Web Site or Web Business?

Do you have a web site or a web business?
What is the difference?

Think about this question: Is a web site a business tool or is a web site a business? It's a trick question. It's both.

As examples: For the small business owner, a web site is a sales and marketing tool. For the most of us – and probably all of us - a web site is a business.
Web site: A web site can be a family site with pictures and details of the family's life events. A web site can be a showcase of an individual's poetry.

Web Business: A web business offers part or all of the business processes on one web site. This could involve web-based marketing for a local printing company, a lead-generation site for a network marketer, an infopreneur site focused on affiliate programs or ebook sales, an interior designer who sells products via the internet.

If you want your web site to be a business, you have to treat it like a business.

So, how do you review your site in an objective manner to determine if it meets the criteria of a web business?

As Stephen Covey so aptly put it: Begin with the end in mind.

In evaluating your site, the first thing you want to look at is how you are making money from it. Are you selling products or a service? Are you generating income with Google Adsense?

You need to determine what it is that you want your business to accomplish. What is the goal of your site?

Your Most Wanted Response
What is it that you want your visitors to do? Do you want them to make a click? do you want them to purchase something? That's your Most Wanted Response.

Once you ascertain how you want your visitors to behave, you can determine if your site leads them to that goal. Does your content lead your visitor to your MWR? Do you pre-sell or do you sell?

Traffic
Now that you know what your site is going to accomplish, you have to figure out how you will reach your target audience. You need a real marketing plan – as all successful businesses do. You have to assess and adjust your marketing scheme based on your audience and your goals.

I am not going to market my interior design service the same way I market my herbal remedies affiliate programs. They are two totally different objectives and have to be handled in different ways. I can market my interior design service via craigslist, but I'll do better posting on alternative health forums for herbal treatments.

Marketing your site on-line comes in the form of traffic generation and it can be done in many ways: social bookmarking, article distribution, free and/or paid directories, press releases and more. Find out what works for your target audience – and don't be afraid to try new ways of drawing traffic.

Presentation
What does your site look like? Does the look and feel match the site concept? If it doesn't, change it. Get someone else's opinion – friends, family or even in the forums. Make sure your site looks professional. If you need to hire a coach to update the design, do it. It will be worth it in the long run.

Is your site easy to navigate, with Tier 2 pages that sub-divide well and naturally lead to several Tier 3 pages?

Site structure (i.e., natural sub-categorization/flow/linking to numerous TIER 3s) is also important. Your visitors must feel that you have presented your site in a logical, easy-to-follow manner.

And lastly....

Content
Your site must provide real benefit to your audience.

A Web site's reputation is based on the "realness" of information and value that it provides to its visitors. You must be the expert in your field. If you are running a business, you have to represent yourself as a business owner, not as a hobbyist who wants to make a little money on the side. Well-written, keyword focused content pages are what ties your business goals to your visitor's needs. When you satisfy their hunger and thirst for information, they will reward you with their moolah.

Conclusion
So, next time you look at your site, evaluate it with these ideas in mind and make sure your web site is truly a web business.

When I first started my website, I had no idea about everything I would learn or needed to learn to make a site successful. I'm fortunate that I haven't had to reinvent the wheel, so to speak. While I have had to read a ton of information and really focus my energy on providing excellent content for my site, I have not had to delve into the SEO distraction that many webmasters find themselves obsessing about.

Why?

I use SiteBuildIt for my web site host. It's more than a host, though. SBI provides over 70 different modules that guide me through the process of creating a website from scratch. I don't have to worry about submitting my site to Google or the other major search engines. It is done automatically (but not too frequently) so that I don't have to chase algorithms or chance oversubmitting.

Web Sites for Writers - Promote Yourself

You want to be a successful writer. You want to make money at it, too. How many books have you read about "self-publishing", "understanding the writer's market" or "how to make your articles sell"? It isn't so easy for unpublished authors to break into certain markets. It doesn't matter how many books you read.

There is one avenue, however, that is virtually untapped by many writers and it is open to EVERYONE who wants to see their works in print. It also allows any writer the opportunity to make money at the same time. You can finally take control over your own writing destiny.

Millions of people will have access to your authored pieces, too. Will publishers come looking for you? It's a definite possibility. Will you have more credibility in the publishing world? Oh, yes. You will also have solid proof of your ability to reach your target audience, too.

Before I tell you how successful you can be, let me tell you the caveats.

First, it is not especially easy. It takes time and effort. If you are a serious writer, you already know what that is all about, though. Second, you will be writing more than you otherwise would. In fact, you will very likely be writing every day for the next couple of months. At least that is what I found myself doing. I love writing, though, so it is not a problem at all for me.

Last, it will most likely become your favorite thing to do. Be prepared to spend a fair amount of time on this because you will enjoy it so much you won't want to do anything else. I am absolutely telling the truth. My kids can't drag me away from the computer some days. I just love what I'm doing.

So, those are the pitfalls. All in all, not too bad.

Now, I can tell you about the good news. You have a myriad of ways to earn money with your writing. For less than $1 per day, you can reach hundreds of thousands of potential readers "buyers" of your works. You can also sell your material in a variety of ways. In addition to this, there are a variety of other ways to make money that don't even have anything to do with writing.

I have an e-book that I sell and I'm in the process of publishing a paperback version which I will also be able to sell very soon.

Ok, enough of that. You can read more of the details if you're interested. For now, let's focus on how you can accomplish this.

If you're like me, you have probably been writing for awhile. I have two books, actually. Both of which have been rejected by big-name publishers. I can handle rejection pretty well, so that's not a real problem for me. What bothered me was that I knew I had good material and no way to reach my intended audience.

Why should I be limited in what I can do just because someone else doesn't see things the same way I do?

My answer? Find another way to reach my audience. That's exactly what I have done, too. I created a web site dedicated to one of my books. I intend to do the same for the other book, too, but I have a few more things I need to accomplish with this first site still.

I am living my dream of being published. Not only am I reaching my target audience, but I am also having numerous articles published on other sites. I have been contacted by two other sites to write for them as well. A third site asked (and I agreed) to provide advice to the members of its site on the very subject I wrote about. I am an instant expert.

I pay less than $1 per day and I am published, in demand and am receiving monthly checks from my site.

Just think about it. It might work for you. It might not. I just know that as writer, it is extremely hard to get your name out there for the right people to see it. This gives you one more opportunity to make a name for yourself.

It All Starts With Recruiting/Lead Generation
If you have no leads, you have...

So what's the problem?
Offline, it's no mystery. Most people have always had trouble working up the courage to recruit and generate leads. Offline, it's not easy to approach strangers, those who are outside their "warm circle of prospects" (i.e., friends, relatives, etc.). That's why most Network Marketers fail.

But online...

Generating leads is "made for the Net." But that's not the way matters have unfolded. Why? Because everyone in the industry has tried to force offline methods to an online world.

It doesn't work. However...

It's Time To "Put The Net Back Into NETwork Marketing"™
There's no need to push (i.e., chase cold calls/prospects)
when you can motivate potential customers and business-builders

First, let's follow the cascade of problems resulting from "forcing the Net"...

PROBLEM #1:
Government highly regulates the Network Marketing industry (to protect people against pyramid rackets). Corporations can be severely fined if you make business claims that are not permitted. Rules also forbid all kinds of claims about all kinds of products, especially those in the wellness industry, making the situation even more difficult for Network Marketers and their companies. Obviously, when it comes to you creating a Web site, your company is scared to death of you getting them into trouble. So...

PROBLEM #2:
Due to severe government regulations (as well as corporate branding concerns), company headquarters does not want its reps/associates to make claims (on the Web) about product or opportunity or the company. So they do not provide their associates with the ability to speak with a "unique" voice (the key to any success on the Net). Actually, most reputable companies forbid their associates from creating their own, unique Web sites. Consequently, you lack the correct tools and strategies to attract and win new leads and/or sales on the Net.

PROBLEM #3:
Corporate headquarters tries to come up with solutions. But they don't understand the Net. For example, some companies develop a very good "content site." If it was the only one of its kind, it would likely do fairly well for one Network Marketing associate. But it's not just for one person -- they replicate the site and make it available to others, figuring that thousands of associates will do even better with it. But...

Replicated "content sites" don't work. The Search Engines ignore them. Worse, actually -- the engines consider them the equivalent of spam since these sites just clog up their databases and degrade the quality of their search results. So the engines penalize replicated content sites.

Replicated stores? This is a better idea, for a particular purpose... order-taking. It's nothing more than a useful tool for tracking your product sales, if you can find someone to send to your store. But...

Replicated stores don't build traffic because they have near-zero content (and if they did have content, the engines would hate them, anyway, because they are replicated).

No traffic, no leads.

No leads, no business.

You're still at Square ONE, trying to build traffic, find leads.

PROBLEM #4:
The final phase is the "vulture phase." This is the inevitable scenario in an industry that holds so much promise, but is floundering. Here are samples of actual copy from three recent ads...
